IAA President Charles Cowling represented the IAA at the Global Conference of Actuaries, organized by the Institute of Actuaries of India. In his capacity, he promoted the global actuary of the future and sharing some of the work we are doing on actuaries in AI. Charles remarked “There were so many highlights including the amazing Deepti Gaur Mukerjee talking about the great work of the Indian National Health Authority (providing free health care to hundreds of millions of people who couldn’t otherwise afford it), the investment wisdom of Nilesh Shah and sharing a platform with Srinath Sridharan on the AI arms race. In the last 5 years, 500 million Indians opened bank accounts for the first time. There is so much potential here - and so much youthful desire to succeed. India is certainly going to be challenging (even more) on the global stage in the next few years.”

Last week, Lusani Mulaudzi, Chair of the Africa Task Force of the Advice and Assistance Committee, took part in the Actuarial Profession Awareness Event that took place in Kigali, Rwanda. During the event, co-hosted by the National Bank of Rwanda and Access to Finance Rwanda, Lusani had the opportunity to address stakeholders from the financial sector and members of the Rwandan Actuarial Society to share experiences of the role of the actuarial association in accelerating the development of the actuarial profession.

The conventional approach to risk management involved the estimation of loss distributions from which provisions and capital could be allocated to absorb expected and unexpected losses. But what happens if a tail event occurs and the Bank is faced with recapitalising the Institution? Or with winding down the Institution without impacting the domestic real economy, or drawing on tax-payers funds or propagating stress into the bank sector? The answer to these questions can be found within the Recovery and Resolution Planning regulatory framework.
